In-house engineering team stretched?

When to bring in an outsourced project manager

Soar Valley projects

For many mid-sized manufacturers, the engineering team is already running at full capacity. Keeping lines running, dealing with breakdowns, supporting continuous improvement and responding to audits fills the week. Then a capital project lands on top: a new production line, a facility upgrade, a compliance-driven retrofit. Something has to give, and too often it is either the project or the day job.

The resourcing gap

Hiring a permanent project manager for a project that may run twelve to eighteen months rarely makes commercial sense. Asking a senior engineer to pick it up alongside their existing role is common, but it carries real risk: missed procurement deadlines, design decisions made under pressure, and safety and compliance duties under CDM, Machinery Safety or DSEAR that don’t get the attention they need.

Signs it may be time to bring in support:
• Project tasks are being pushed into evenings and weekends
• Key decisions are waiting on one or two overloaded people
• Contractor and supplier coordination is slipping
• Compliance documentation is falling behind the build

What an embedded PM partner takes off your plate

An outsourced project manager takes on the workload that drains internal capacity: scoping and programme planning, contractor and supplier management, procurement of process and capital equipment, construction safety management, cost control, progress reporting and handover through commissioning. Your engineers stay focused on operations and contribute their expertise where it matters most, specifying requirements and signing off key decisions.

Keeping internal ownership

Bringing in outside support doesn’t mean handing over control. The best arrangements are built on clear governance: agreed decision points, regular reporting to your internal sponsor, and full transparency on cost, programme and risk. Your team owns the outcome; your PM partner carries the delivery workload.

Your representative, not another contractor

At Soar Valley Projects, we act as the client’s representative. We sit on your side of the table, protecting your investment, challenging contractors where needed and making sure what is delivered matches what your operation actually needs. We have no interest in selling you more equipment or more works than the project requires.

A service that scales with you

Every business needs a different level of support. Some clients need a back-of-house resource for planning, procurement and compliance documentation. Others need a full project team leading delivery from mobilisation through to commissioning. Our service scales to fit, and flexes as the project evolves.

If your engineering team is stretched and a major project is on the horizon, talk to Soar Valley Projects about how we can help.

Project Confidence. Delivered.
